BUS/CAR TRANSPORTATION

Bus Transportation to School

The school provides bus transportation for all students who live farther than 1 and 1/2 miles from school.  The bus schedule and route is available by contacting the Transportation Director at (906)  248-3218.

Students will ride only assigned school buses and will board and depart from the bus at assigned bus stops.  Students will not be permitted to ride unassigned buses for any reasons other than an emergency, except as approved by the Principal.

A change in a student's regular assigned bus stop may be granted for a special need, if a note from a parent is submitted to the building principal stating the reason for the request and the duration of the change and the principal approves.

Bus Conduct

Students who are riding on transportation provided by the school are required to follow some basic safety rules.  This applies to school-owned buses as well as any contracted transportation that may be provided.

The driver is responsible for students safety and may assign seating or direct the student in any reasonable manner to maintain that safety.

The following behaviors are expected of all students:

Previous to loading (on the road and at school) Each student shall:

  •  be on time at the designated loading zone (5 minutes prior to scheduled stop);

  • stay off the road at all times while walking to and waiting for the bus;

  • line up single file off the roadway to enter;

  • wait until the bus is completely stopped before moving forward to enter;

  • go immediately to a seat and be seated.

It is the parent's responsibility to inform the bus driver when their child will not be boarding the bus.  The bus will not wait.  Drivers will not wait for students who are not at their designated stops on time.

During the trip:

  •  students are expected to obey the bus driver's directions at all times;

  • students are expected to go directly to their seats and remain seated until the bus stops at school or at their home.  Bus drivers may assign seats if they feel it becomes necessary;

  • Elementary students are not allowed to ride a different bus unless a written note from the Office is given to the bus driver or an authorized person gives a verbal message.

  • Students will not have with them tobacco, drugs, alcoholic drinks, or weapons on the bus;

  • Arms, heads, hands, and all parts of the body will remain inside the bus at all times;

  • Students will talk in normal tones  Disruptive behavior, loud or vulgar language, and name calling or teasing are forbidden;

  • Students are expected to help in keeping the bus clean and orderly;

  • Students may not damage or vandalize the bus;

  • Students will use the door assigned by the driver in cases of emergency only and will be assisted by older riders of the driver;

  • Students are not to check mailboxes until the bus has safely left.

Leaving the Bus Each Student Shall:

  •  remain seated until the bus has stopped;

  • cross the road, when necessary, at least ten (10) feet in front of the bus, but only after the driver signals that it is safe;

  • be alert to a possible danger signal from the driver.

The driver will not discharge students at places other than their regular stop at home or at school unless s/he has proper authorization from the school officials.

Videotapes on School Buses

The Board of Education has installed video cameras on school buses to monitor student behavior.  Actual videotaping of the students on any particular bus is done every day.

If a student misbehaves on a bus and his/her actions are recorded on a videotape, the tape will be submitted to the principal and may be used as evidence of the misbehavior.  Since these tapes are considered part of a student's record, they can be viewed only in accordance with Federal law.

Penalties for Infractions

A bus ticket may be issued if a student violates any of the Bus Rules or for any other serious offense.

Steps of discipline are as follows:

  1.  1st Offense: The student will receive a warning from the Principal and the parents will be notified by mail.  A copy of the Bus Rules and Consequences will be sent home.

  2. 2nd Offense: The student will be suspended from riding the bus for three (3) days.

  3. 3rd Offense:  The student will be suspended from riding the bus for six (6) days.

  4. 4th Offense:  The student will be suspended from riding the bus for twelve (12) days.

  5. 5th Offense:  The student will go before the Board of Education, with the possibility of suspension of bus privileges entirely or possible expulsion from school depending on the nature for any transportation to and from school not officially provided by this meeting.

Self-Transportation to School

Parking on school property is a privilege, which can be revoked at any time.  Students who are provided the opportunity to ride school transportation are encouraged to do so.  Students and their parents assume full responsibility for any transportation to and from school not officially provide by the school.

  1.  All vehicles driven to school by students are to be registered in the High School Office;

  2. Parking lot speed limit is 10 mph;

  3. Students are to park only in the designated student parking areas;
